Sounds like it could be interesting, at least if Steam is being a pain it means we can still play, so many times have I had issues and its like ahhhhhh I just want to play damn you *shakes fist*.

My only concern is that I wont be able to as easily play with my friends who are currently on my Steam friends list in the launcher, either having to re-friend all these people in this system or that I wont be able to find them as easily or play with them as easily as I currently can.

Sounds like it could in the end though be interesting; I'll definitely give it a bash.

I wonder if a new platform is going to result in the eventual implementation of a trade system. Or more reliable parties. Those are my hopes.

Ooooh, good point! Freedom from steam would mean that and trading would not need to go through steam's for-cash system, that would have encouraged cheating and just playing for item drops and extortion etc.

It might also mean that LAN connection and private servers might be possible when official ones are down.

Thanks Psyonix for adding a launcher, it's appreciated! I'm sure it will bring all the players back who quit because of gameplay bugs, bad design decisions, and terrible matchmaking. Now that I don't need Steam all the unregistered hits and disappearing AOEs will be nothing but a minor nuisance.

whats the reason to release a launcher at this point when the playerbase decreases massively?

Since they already made clear that they won't use the steam trading system the introduction of a standalone browser will probably be really helpfull for their own trading system. Other than that I hope it will get rid of a lot of connectivity issues.

Improved communication, smaller faster updates, flexibility leading to more exposure and potential players (in turn benefiting the playerbase).

It's all there in the OP.

@Ysanoire: Trade system, my god, yes.

The reason games like smite or crisis got into steam was a decreasing player-pool, a launcher doesnt help at all with this problem. i mean which gamer doesnt use steam in the first place?

Hardcore gamers, I agree, most likley have a Steam account. But many filthy casuals (you know - those people I know from real life ) are either completely oblivious to Steam's existance or don't want to create another account on top of their XboxLive, Origin, Uplay and whatever else is out there just for ONE game. There are many people that are very careful downloading an extra platform just to play a F2P game.

Wow, I'm really going to hate this because I like how Nosgoth is tightly integrated with Steam. I don't want to refriend people again, I don't want to set up my profile again, I don't want to input my password in some launcher again and pray to the Elder God that it doesn't forget it as it often does in various launchers and I don't want the launcher to be there at all, I want to double click and -BAM, the game, just like it is now.
So yeah, when this launches for good, I'll probably abandon Nosgoth. Which is a shame, what's with me being a player since Alpha and Nosgoth being my most played game on Steam.
Could you please focus on bug fixes (abyssal bolt ), balance and optimization instead? Please? Pretty please?

Then again, any PC gamer worth their salt has at least a dozen of games that require Steam by default.

It's not going to be taken off of steam, it's just going to be given it's own launcher, so you won't have to worry about anything changing in that regard.

And hey, you never know, there may be someone out there who only plays a couple of games and so doesn't have steam, but they play those games a whole lot, really good, and in offering Nosgoth through a non-steam interface, we'll get that really awesome player who finds another favorite game!

And I'm sure there are a few old-school LoK fans who still haven't picked up this game because they don't play steam games. At least a couple.

It won't be taken off Steam, but I'm still going have to deal with the launcher, am I not? If they won't leave the Steam integration features in the Steam version (which would mean maintaining two different builds that are compatible, which they obviously aren't going to do) it'll still mean setting up the profile anew, setting up the friend list again and so on and so forth and [bleep!] that, I better go play CSGO.
Also: updating through launcher means that the game won't update silently in the background when inactive as it does now - I'll have to deal with the update once I launch the launcher, IE right when I want to play the game and due to the nature of this game as a pick up and play thing, this is not good by any stretch of imagination.

so paladins is in closed beta, overwatch will go into open beta soon, lawbreakers coming 2016, paragon coming 2016 and you guys really think an open launcher would help to get some casuals in who dont own steam but for some reason know about nosgoth which is an asymetric shooter and doesnt interest most people in the first place who runs on an outdated directx?

I'm not sure what the launcher will actually do in terms of parties and logins, so I'm gonna wait before I judge it.

However, what does that mean in terms of people being banned and returning over and over again? I mean, is creating a "Nosgoth account" easier or harder than creating a Steam account? Because if it is the former, I don't think this will help with cheaters at all.

This is likely to be in preparation for Nosgoth's release and the notable advertisement that will come with it.

1- faster update is not this huge good thing:

you will take 5 minuts instead of 30 to download the patch?
    so what?
for most patches the server are offline hours and hours, so even if you download fast the patch you will be unable to play till the servers are up again.

Plus, if you use steam and left it open, will download and patch when you are at work, you back home and you find the game already patched, but with a launcher you must open the launcher to have the game patched.

So say bye bye to steam automatic updates.

Also this not mean at all will be updates more often as someone seems to understand.

Also seems people dont take in account the bandwidth, steam go always full speed, have server located in all country so you always download from a server located in your zone and so on... the steam infrastructure is massive and good.
with a stand alone client the download will rely on enix resources only so even smaller patch from a enix server will never be fast like download from steam, even worst they can add a bittorrent client and use your upload to save bandwith.
Many stand alone client do this to distribute the patches and is a pain in the arse.

2- more player? i doubt there are left player with no steam and if they are probable are a little %, i also doubt people unable to run steam properly have computers able to run nosgoth properly, lol

Probable will be easier for cheater create new account, lol.

3-another dev team, but this dev team cost money, this money can be better spend in pay another dev team to optimize the fps of the game, or to do useful stuff like the N feature promises since forever and never added in the game

We complain too much? check steamchart, the game is already dying, the ranked was a cancer and people like me complained about before and during, others dont complain simple left the game.

we complain because we care and we are aware the direction the game have taken in the last 6-8 months is a bad one.

While our game teams at Psyonix and Square Enix Montreal continue to crush bugs and bring new updates to the game, we’ve had a team at Square Enix London developing a new platform upon which Nosgoth will grow. Introducing the Nosgoth Launcher.

    A New Platform? Why?
Good question! With the Nosgoth launcher, we’re looking to achieve a few things:

    • Flexibility – Choose How You Play
    • Smaller Game Updates
    • Improved communication – Especially for languages other than English
    • Increased Design Flexibility

Flexibility – Choose How You Play

Nosgoth currently runs on one platform – Steam. Plenty of PC gamers around Europe and North America are happy with that as they already use Steam to play other games. That’s not going to change, we love offering Nosgoth on Steam and it’s here to stay.

However, we want to provide more choice when it comes to HOW people play Nosgoth. This applies to regular PC gamers, as well as gaming portals around the world. These portals are looking to bring Nosgoth to new players in their regions; in some cases, Steam isn’t necessarily as popular there.

Eventually, you will have the option to run Nosgoth via a standalone launcher that doesn’t require Steam whatsoever. This increased flexibility allows us to introduce many more gamers around the globe to Nosgoth, which will lead to a larger playerbase and improved matchmaking results.

But we’re getting ahead of ourselves, let’s look at what else we’re looking to do with the launcher first.

    Smaller Game Updates
Steam and Unreal Engine 3 interact in quite an odd way when delivering updates, which means that much more duplicate data is being delivered than really needs to be. This is an issue that nearly all UE3 games on Steam face. With the Nosgoth Launcher, we’ll be looking to rectify that.

The Launcher gives us more control over the data delivery pipeline, removing that weird interaction, allowing us to deliver smaller updates. We must point out that on occasion, we will still need to push out game updates that will end up being large; however update sizes will generally be smaller than they have been to date.

    Improved Communication
The Nosgoth Launcher will provide us with a window through which we can give you the latest news and info about Nosgoth. This will be particularly useful for non-English speakers as the launcher will allow us to deliver this information in more languages than is currently possible in-game. We’ll delve into more detail about the specific languages as that phase of the launcher rolls out.

A new game update has been released? You’ll have a link to the full patch notes in the launcher. A new game event has launched? We’ll let you know right in the launcher! A new item has been released in the store? We’ll let you know there.

    Multi-Phase Release
The Nosgoth Launcher will release over multiple phases, with each introducing its own set of features. As Phase 1 is nearly upon us, we’ll take a deeper look at that first. We’ll publish follow-up articles containing more information as we approach the release of each phase.
We’re currently putting the Launcher through an intensive course of testing. This is our target date for the rollout of the first phase. Should any large bugs be identified, we are happy to push the release back.

    Phase 1 – 16th December:
This release focuses on doing the basics right. There’s a lot to take into consideration when rolling out a new authentication system to potentially millions of players, and so our first release will focus primarily on nailing authentication…baby steps .

You’ll also see the first phase implementation of launcher news, which will initially be quite basic; but will give you an idea of the kind of content you can expect there.

This phase of the release will still require Steam in order to work. Oh, and yes; if you want the launcher to remember your login details so that you don’t ever have to type them again, there is an option to make that happen .

    Future Phases
We’ll go into greater depth about future release phases as we approach them, but for the time being, these are the key changes that you’ll see via future updates. It’s important to note that these features may be subject to change.

    Standalone Desktop Launcher
Will allow you to launch Nosgoth without Steam.

    New Friends System
To ensure that non-Steam players are still able to play with everyone else, we’ll be moving Nosgoth’s friend system over to our own purpose built environment that’s powered by the Nosgoth Launcher back-end. Initial functionality will be similar to Steam’s basic Friend functionality.

    New Avatars and Display Names
Again, as we’ll be moving away from a reliance on Steam, we’re developing a new avatar and username system. We’ve stocked the avatar library with a wide selection of Nosgoth art for you to choose from, while your Username is now entirely independent from your Steam name, allowing your display name to be perfectly tailored for blood sucking purposes.

    Smaller Game Updates
The Nosgoth Launcher will allow us to roll out smaller updates for the game, something that plenty of you have been asking about for quite some time .

    Last Chance, Link Your Account!
If you haven’t already done so, now is the time to link your Steam and Square Enix Membership accounts to earn 150 Runestones! By linking your accounts, you’ll pick up the 150 Runestone reward and have your account set up and ready to log in when the Nosgoth Launcher rolls out to Steam.

We will be saying farewell to the reward for linking accounts on the 15th of December, so make sure to do so before time runs out if you haven’t already!

    Nosgoth Launcher Early Adopter Reward
As a thank you to everyone who helps make the transition to the Launcher as smooth as possible, we’ll be granting a free chest key to everyone who logs into Nosgoth after the first few days of the Nosgoth Launcher’s release.

To be clear, the free keys will be distributed between the 16th and 21st of December. Be sure to log-in as soon as the launcher is up, so that you don’t miss out!

    FAQ On the Way
I’m sure plenty of you have a ton of questions about the introduction of the Nosgoth Launcher. We’ve got an extensive FAQ on the way, we’re just confirming some additional details. In the meantime, please feel free to ask any questions that you might have, and I’ll try to get back to you with a response as soon as I can.

Let us know what you think of the Nosgoth launcher. Will you use the standalone version of the game when it's ready, or are you a happy fan of Steam who's going to stick with that?
The launcher is a big white box its not working!!!!!!!!!
The linking system is a big bug, i fight with that since july 2015,i cant make it stick.

From 144fps to like 100fps or even lower in fights. Solid update!
