Thumbs Down (PC) Crash on Chapter 2 (Dust to Dust)

The game crashes on Chapter 2 (Dust to Dust). I entered a door/level and now it crashes. Tried 32bit/64bit executables, updated latest AMD 14.2 BETA v1.3 Driver, tried Exclusive Full Screen, and same problem. Im on Win8.1x64
Cant continue the game, every time the game loads, it crashes. Dont want to start again...
Many other guys on Steam are having the same problem:

I had the same issue, you'll find the thread around here. The solution is to lower the graphics setting to Very Low. Once the cutscene has finished (it's this that is crashing the game), you can put the settings up again.

Thats a workaround. I dont want to do it as other guys had more hangs on the same level and dont want to play the game on lower settings.

I only had to lower the settings for the cutscene, once it played I put the settings up again and played the rest of the level just fine. Yes it's a workaround and I would like it fixed properly, but at least I can continue with the game after that and I had no other crashes in that level.

I have tried setting the GFX level down for the cut scenes, but that only works for some situations. "The Drop" cut scene, for example, this does not work. And I am waiting for the next patch now to fix this problem. I will not play Thief until this issue has been resolved. The cut scenes are the story line. That is a main theme to the game. To me, it is very important!

I get this too. Extremely annoying. My PC actually hard-crashes, meaning I have to hit the reset button. This has happened every time on Chapter 2. At first it crashed in one of the menus, then it started crashing before the cut-scene where the camera whizzes over the yard. Every other game I play on the PC is flawless and I had no such issues.

Some workarounds I get. This one is very important as it has everything to do with the story. To me, Thief (or any of the Thief games) revolves around the story. It is why Thief is set apart from other "first person" games. Audio is also very important as you rely on audio ques in the game. So, first and formost, these issues are major! The save issue is also very important as well. But, for all of this whining, Skyrim was a like this too. For me, when Skyrim came out, it was simply unplayable. The screen would freeze or graphics get corrupted. The sounds get distorted, ect. It took Bethesda about a year before it was finally playable. That's the problem really. Not enough time to test and adjust the code to fully optimize the game. Just have to wait until all of these major bugs are worked out.

Personally, I kinda lost hope that there will ever be another patch... There's no money to be made with patching - who cares about product quality anyway...

I think there will be other patches. If not, someone else might fix the problems over time. Thief looks great. It does have the feel of the original, with better graphics and sound features. No one has said they will not continue to patch Thief. In fact, the patches have been released about every month or so. Seems to me that they are embracing these issues. And, if EIDOS abandons Thief, then any other game they release will not have the support and the popularity of gamers that will simply remember what happened to previous titles. Continued support will make further title releases more appealing. Abandon a title, like Thief, then few will purchase future titles from you. I believe that Thief will continue to be improved. After all, EIDOS reputation is at stake here.

I think the Chapter 2 crashes only affect a small number of users, which is why I think it's unlikely to be fixed. Anyway, I set everything to low and it seems to have gotten through the problem. Still annoying though and a bit paranoid it will happen again in the following chapters!

That is possible. May never get fixed. I have the latest rig for this game, and everything does run well except for the cut scenes issue. Having to set my gfx to low, then back to full every time a cut scene begins is very frustrating. I do hope this gets fixed. I don't want to wait several years before some 3rd part group fixes that issue.

The fact that the issue, a bug that actually crashes your video drivers, has persisted in the game for over half a year without a solution that is better than a shoddy workaround is ridiculous. I am sad that QM in games has become something of a joke these days.

Install the 14.9 drivers. Those are the latest drivers.

It comes down to beta testing. IMO this game was not fully beta tested. But, that's the problem with many new titles. Not fully beta tested. They set a release date in stone, and the beta testing is usually not complete. It takes a lot of time in beta before a game has a good RC. So understand that this is not just Thief. And, Viktoria has said that they are continuing to work on Thief (sound/save and other issues).

Currently I am looking into an issues where Thief does not load up. It is just a black screen when you launch from the Steam client. Possible driver issues (the new 14.9 drivers may have broken something in Thief) so I am going to revert the GFX drivers back and see if the problem goes away. Some of these issues can be GFX/Sound driver conflicts. So, PC's have many issues that game consoles don't have. It is just a matter of time before all of this gets sorted IMO.
