I don't think this is a hardware issue by a long shot.
At least that's what my 30FPS say when playing this, it clearly still goes through loading shadows just for some reason they get inverted. And that is not a damn hardware bug.If it would be I'd probably not be able to play the game at all.
There's literally no issue for me with FPS(I run x32 bit version right now while they fix x64bit), it's just the shadows.
No, I'm afraid you do not meet the minimum requirements:

    CPU: High-end dual-core/quad-core
GPU: AMD Radeon 4800 series / Nvidia GTS 250

Since that is the case, it was bound to be a wild chance the game would run anywhere near decent, never mind glitch-free! Nixxes posted those system requirements for a reason, despite providing an extremely good PC version. I don't think there's anything that can be done, since I've not seen this issue reported by people with modern GPU's and who are still struggling with the issue after the above fix. You would be much better off upgrading your rig or just playing the game on a console.

And please stop using the approximate requirements, Resident Evil 5 had gargantuan requirements, but it bloody well worked on my way older PC on high.I never trust System requirements unless it's got approximates like 4Gigabytes, etc, I am pretty sure I meet those really well.

I will still insist it's not a hardware glitch.Because what you told us referred to a different fix, the "rezzed" textures bug.Our Shadows bug?I will be honest I do not believe it to be a bug related to hardware.Since when did having an older card cause shadows in a game to work yet be inverted? It doesn't make sense. If I had hardware bugs I'd be having black screen or something like that but not an inversion of the dynamic shadows.

I am curious to see if Nixxes manage to provide fix for the shadow issue, since it doesn't appear on modern GPUs, just the ones that don't or only just meet the minimum system requirements. Just keep posting in the relevant thread and we'll keep our fingers crossed for a tweak/patch!

I really do hope so because other than this, I run the game pretty well.Got stuck for a bit on chapter 4 with how to reach the architect's room but that'll be solved by my brain.Eventually.

I know my CPU Have Intel HD 4600 but it's not detected, why you can't believe me ??
I play another game with AMD 7990 GPU not Intel one, if my intel is detected so my BF 4 will be at 15 FPS at ultra

I'm sorry, I won't press you any further! It's just that you have a KILLER rig that should totally destroy THIEF and I really don't know why you're getting stuttering and these other issues. It's a damn shame, that's what this is.

I can fix stutter, when i do this bUseBackgroundLevelStreaming= [False]
But i get textures glitches, but when i make it True there's not textures glitches and work will but there's stutter annoying me, this my problem i get good FPS but there stutter annoying me this my main problem, and shadow glitches is my second problem

Is there a way to lower the intensity of "object highlight"? It's a bit bright right now. Thanks.

None that I personally know of, but if you were to search in the .ini files for an "objecthighlight" line, I'm sure you'd be able to find something. I don't have access to the game at the moment, but if you manage to sort this out, please report back and I'll include this tweak on the main page!

Thanks again, Verrenus! Sorry for my late reply...I've been busy on the rooftops. The random crashes appear to be leftover issues before using the Win32 fix. I actually have not had it crash since I made the fix, restarted, and turned off the Steam Cloud sync. Now, everything changed with the update that Steam pushed early this morning around 2-3 a.m. I will respond to that in a separate post below. Again, thanks for helping us old-time thieves shine up our rusty tools and get them working again. :P

I was actually considering upgrading to an Intel Core i7-4930K @ 3.40GHz. It may be a bit costly--roughly twice the cost of any CPU I have ever purchased, but when compared to other high-end CPUs, it looks like it performs up there in benchmarks with those that are double or triple the cost. My Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 is a mid-range CPU, according to Passmark, and scores a measly 2302 on the average CPU mark, while the Intel Core i7-4930K scores 13,354. Now, that's the kind of jump in performance that I like.

It may be some time before I get to upgrade, but here's hoping!

I have my pagefile set to a custom 200 - 1024 MB on Windows 7 Professional (x64) and never had any issues with these values, so I would definitely recommend you change your to these values!
I found an equation in reference to optimizing the pagefile for Windows 7 and other games, and it was making the pagefile at least the same size as your RAM and making the max three times your RAM. I thought it really wouldn't hurt, especially since it looked like Windows 8 did not max the pagefile out as recommended. At some point, I will go back and revert those settings to managed by Windows and see if it makes any difference.

Hey, I wondered whether I could get some help with the black screen issue?
When I launch the game (after I go through the actual launcher) all I get is a black screen, no sound or anything, but my CPU still runs at about 70% capacity even though seemingly nothing is happening. I tried the pagefile fix but it made no difference.

My GPU is under the minimal requirements, but I have had success in running Thief before (only problem I had was low fps, which is expected) so I know it's not a hardware thing, but just in case:

    OS: Windows 7
    RAM: 4gb
    CPU: Intel i3 M380
    GPU: NVidia GeForce GT630M

Resolution: 1920x1080 (tried lower ones at first, but this works fine now)
Refresh Rate: 60 Hz (only option for me)
    Vsync: Off

Texture Quality: Very High (tried lower settings at first, but this works perfect now)
    Shadow Quality: Low

Only thing i had to change was the Texture quality, the guide says you can go Very high, if you do the game does look nice but everytime you load a chapter or a cut-scene the game stutters so i switched it to Normal and seems to be working smooth now, i guess it depends on the video card, i have 3 GTX 470's in SLI and in my opinion this game should work flawlessly in max settings, i guess they still need a patch to fix this

Are there still problems with the game stuttering? do they have any plans to fix it with a patch? any work around?
@Vortexware: Those Thief settings and the way they're formatted look very familiar (especially the parenthetical comments). :P My GTX 560 Ti does not stutter at those settings. In addition to Verrenus' comments, did you try slightly lowering the texture quality to see if that helped? How bad is the stuttering? It sounds like it only happens for a brief moment at the beginning of a cut scene or a loading screen. If that's the case, is that not bearable? For me, I cannot stand random stuttering--it reminds me of my agonizing experience with Doom 3 when it first came out.

@Hasara: By Pagefile fix, are you referring to making sure that it is at least turned on? That appears to be the recommendation I have seen for the black screen problem. I would also use the other recommendations for replacing the Win64 folder with a copy of the Win32 folder. Once I did that, the game did not take as long to start. Before I did that, the black screen lasted for what felt like minutes--making me think the game had crashed. If I just waited around, it would eventually load. I hope this helps!

I tried both made sure the pagefile turned on and then tried the custom settings also. I haven't tried the Win64 fix however, I will do now though, will update if it helps!

Also, I actually waited 7 minutes (I timed it) on the black screen and nothing happened, I gave up on that point, so I guess there is a possibility it's just a ridiculously slow loading time and not an actual bug of some sorts.

EDIT: And it works, I really just needed to tick the 32bit option, I can not believe it was so simple, thank you!

Well, shoot. I had composed this analysis of the latest Thief update only to finally refer back to Verrenus' original post and found that it had been updated. Doh! Thanks for the update Eidos and the updated fix for 32-bit Verrenus! Now, if only there were a checkbox for the intro movie....

@Verrenus and all interested: The Nvidia SLI compatibility bits 0x000540F5 run the exact same FPS as the default Thief SLI profile made by Nvidia that uses 0x000100F5. That is: On benchmark 71 max and 36 average. Compare this to single-GPU mode of 67 max and 44 average (for my system).

My tip to everyone using Nvidia SLI mode: Nvidia Control Panel > Manage 3D settings > Thief > SLI Rendering Mode - Single GPU. Disabling SLI mode on my computer made all the stuttering vanish. I was even able to increase the graphics quality settings and it still runs very smooth.

Tweak II made the biggest difference for me...starting with the Very High Preset I only dropped SSAA to low as well as dropped Texture Filtering Quality from 8X to 4X which gave me 6 more FPS (from a dismal benchmark of 21 to a respectful 27 Avg. FPS). But, I had some horrible stuttering which didn't clear up until after about 5 minutes of gameply; however, checking the '32-bit' option cleared that up completely...thanks to the community.
    II. Fix stuttering/poor performance
Turning SSAA to low or even off can free up a significant amount of performance, with minimum loss to image quality!
Using the 32bit version of Thief can help eliminate stuttering and other performance-related issues:
In the game Launcher of Thief version 1.2 or higher, select Options, check '32-bit'. This forces the 32bit version of the game even on 64bit capable systems. The 32bit version has some features disabled that reduce memory usage, and as such can improve performance.
I built this rig about 6 years ago and I was afraid the GeForce 560 wouldn't meet my needs; however, it came through just fine.

Here's some information I found while surfing the 'net. I can't vouch for the person who wrote it actually knowing for a fact that what he says is true, but some may find it useful nonetheless.

    As posted by carbonFibreOptik:

The PC version is not well-optimized and some higher-level shader functions only serve to kill your framerate. The number one thing you can do to speed up the game is to ~disable~ contact hard shadows. They actually don't have a use in the game (the parameters necessary for the feature aren't set on any given light sources) yet it almost quadruples the GPU power and doubles the vRAM needed to render all real-time shadows.

The other useless feature is screen-space reflections. Close to all reflective surfaces in the game aren't given the SSR shader option. The ones that do are puddles, but usually with non-SSR puddles right next to them. This makes SSR look out of place, along with barely being used and in my opinion never being used in an artistically appealing manner. The hit when enabling this is that those surfaces ALWAYS RENDER even when occluded (double-rendering some things in the process!). Also to facilitate the screen-space cloning, there is a permanent reflective plane below the map that always renders the SSR shader. This means the rarely-used and costly reflections are always eating up graphics resources. Killing this option may in some cases ~double~ your framerate (notably if you are close to your vRAM limit without it enabled).

Thanks a lot, Targa! I will update the OP with this information and maybe someone can do some benchmarks with and without those two settings enabled? That would give us some confirmation I think!

Screen space reflection is always enabled.
I just did a comparison with the contact hard shadows option enabled and disabled. Benchmark only, not the actual game.
With it disabled, the game ran a little bit faster (average of 45 fps instead of 43).

All settings at max, with SSAA off, depth of field at normal, vsync disabled and res 1920x1080.
I enabled the adaptive vsync in nVidia drivers though.

Besides stuttering when textures are loading and the occasional fps drop to 45 fps, game runs mostly at 60 fps. If I disable the adaptive vsync, game reach 80 fps in some places
I didn't notice a different with the contact hard shadows feature on or off... but then again I didn't do a frame comparison to see if image quality lowers with the feature off.

Disabling the screen space reflection didn't change the performance of the game... not even by 1 frame! Couldn't see any degradation in picture quality either.

    My specs:
    Core I7 2600 3.4GHz, 8GB RAM, eVGA GeForce GTX 570HD with 2.5GB of VRAM, Creative Audigy 2 ZS sound card with a 5.1 speakers system, Win7 SP1 64-bits and nVidia drivers v331.82.
Running the 32-bits version of the game. The 64-bits run at average of 40 fps.

I tested while playing as well and results were the same as the benchmark.
disabling the contact hard shadows increased around 2.3 fps. screen space reflection on or off didn't made any difference.

SSR must be part of the de-activated features in the 32 bits exe
