    'Thief's Xbox One Kinect and PS4 microphone features explained

    Last November saw the release of Microsoft and Sony's new home consoles. As the eighth console cycle is still in its infancy, many early adopters are still wondering how developers will take advantage of the new hardware. We recently sat down with Daniel Windfeld Schmidt, who acted as the lead level designer on the Thief reboot, and asked him how the upcoming title would utilize these systems' unique features.

    We use the Kinect Sensor to track the noise output of the primary player on Xbox One – this feature is also available on PS4 if you have a microphone attached – and the guards will react to a noise above a certain threshold.

    Schmidt went on to state that, like many of the other settings, players will have the ability to turn this noise tracking feature off. This could potentially make the game much more difficult, or it could aid the player in times where they may need to distract a guard or draw them closer. We're interested to see how this feature could possibly enhance the gameplay when Thief launches for the PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3 and PS4 on February 25th.

    Seems very gimmicky. These extra features on the consoles- Kinect and Playstation move functionality, the Dualshock4 lightbar etc. just seem like a solution to a problem that doesn't exist to me. Developers are shoehorning them into their games and honestly, they aren't needed. That's not to say they're bad, just pointless.
